Location: Mooloo, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland
Project: Forestry Mulching, Steep Slope Vegetation Clearing & Property Access Restoration
Equipment: FAE RCU-75 Remote-Controlled Forestry Mulcher

Some properties present challenges that ordinary machinery simply can’t tackle. Steep hillsides, dense vegetation and difficult access can make even routine property maintenance a major undertaking.

For Creek 2 Coast, these are exactly the kinds of projects we love.

Our recent vegetation clearing project in Mooloo, in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, involved approximately 180 acres of steep country backing onto state forest. Years of vegetation growth had left large sections of the property difficult to access, restricting cattle movement, obscuring fence lines and making ongoing maintenance increasingly challenging.

The goal wasn’t simply to clear vegetation. It was to reclaim usable land, restore access and make the property more manageable for the future, while retaining established native trees and minimising unnecessary disturbance.

The Challenge: 180 Acres of Steep, Overgrown Hinterland

Managing a large rural property comes with its own set of challenges, particularly when steep terrain and invasive vegetation are involved.

At Mooloo, dense lantana, scrub and overgrown vegetation had gradually taken over sections of the hillsides and surrounding paddocks.

Some areas had become so heavily overgrown that accessing them with conventional machinery was extremely difficult.

For a working cattle property, this creates practical problems. Restricted access makes it harder to move livestock between paddocks, locate cattle, maintain fences and carry out routine property management.

With the property backing onto state forest, selective vegetation management was also important to maintain the natural character of the landscape.

The challenge was finding a way to clear the overgrowth effectively while navigating steep slopes and working around established vegetation.

The Solution: Remote-Controlled Forestry Mulching

This is where our specialist equipment really comes into its own.

For the Mooloo project, we used our FAE RCU-75 remote-controlled forestry mulcher, designed to tackle dense vegetation and challenging terrain where conventional machinery may struggle.

Unlike traditional machinery that requires an operator to sit inside the vehicle, the RCU-75 is operated remotely, allowing the operator to maintain a safer position away from the machine while it works across difficult ground.

Its tracked design and powerful mulching capabilities make it particularly suited to steep slopes, dense scrub and hard-to-reach areas.

Instead of removing vegetation through extensive excavation, forestry mulching cuts and processes unwanted growth on site, leaving behind a layer of organic material.

This approach can reduce the need to transport vegetation away and help limit soil disturbance compared with more invasive clearing methods.

The results at Mooloo impressed even the property owner, Phil.

“I couldn’t believe the slopes this thing can work on. Amazing stuff!” — Phil, Property Owner

It’s feedback like this that highlights the difference specialist machinery can make when working on challenging hinterland properties.

Restoring Access for Cattle and Property Maintenance

One of the main objectives of the project was to reopen areas that had become inaccessible due to dense vegetation.

Through targeted forestry mulching, we cleared overgrown sections to improve access between paddocks and make livestock management more practical.

For cattle farmers, reliable access is essential. Whether it’s mustering livestock, checking on animals or reaching different parts of the property, overgrown terrain can quickly become a major obstacle.

By reducing vegetation density and reopening previously inaccessible areas, we helped make the property more functional for everyday farming operations.

The work also included clearing heavily overgrown fence lines to expose existing boundaries and improve access for future fencing and maintenance.

These improvements aren’t always the most dramatic part of a project, but they can make a significant difference to how efficiently a property operates.

Selective Clearing: Working With the Landscape

Not every tree or plant needs to go.

An important part of the Mooloo project was taking a selective approach to vegetation clearing, focusing on invasive growth and unwanted scrub while retaining established native trees and desirable vegetation.

The property is home to mature trees, including an impressive fig tree that forms part of the landscape’s character.

Rather than treating the entire site as something to be cleared, our approach was to work around valuable existing vegetation wherever practical.

By carefully targeting dense lantana and overgrowth, we could improve access and visibility while preserving the natural features that make the property special.

This is an important consideration for rural landowners throughout the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, where vegetation management often involves balancing practical land use with the surrounding environment.

Effective vegetation management isn’t always about clearing more. It’s about clearing the right areas.

More Than Mulching: Improving Property Infrastructure

The Mooloo project also involved additional earthworks to support the property’s long-term functionality.

Alongside the vegetation clearing, Creek 2 Coast carried out excavation and trenching works to accommodate power and water services to the shed.

We also established an all-weather access ramp to improve access around the property.

These works complemented the forestry mulching, helping create a more practical and accessible rural property.

By combining vegetation management with excavation and access improvements, we were able to address several property challenges as part of the same project.

The Result: Reclaiming Land That Had Become Unusable

The transformation at Mooloo was about much more than how the property looked.

Previously overgrown areas became accessible again. Dense vegetation was reduced, fence lines were exposed and access for cattle movement and ongoing maintenance was improved.

Most importantly, the project demonstrated what can be achieved with the right equipment, experience and approach to challenging terrain.

For large rural properties across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, steep slopes and invasive vegetation don’t have to mean permanently losing access to valuable land.

With specialist remote-controlled forestry mulching, even difficult areas can become manageable again.
